While changing the Lower Unit oil, 1986 75 HP Mercury Outboard, I discovered a “marble size” glob of metal shavings. These were the size of a coarse sand and were also throughout the oil as it drained out. The last oil change was about 40 hrs (run time) ago. What does this indicate and how do I approach solving this problem?

I would say an inspection of the internals is needed. Likely a bad Bearing

Thank you. How would I inspect for a bad bearing? That is, how would I know that a bearing is bad? And how do I get to it/them?

Start with a factory service manual and then disassemble the lower unit and all internals.
