gotta 1986 6hp evinrude that starts right up, one or two pulls, idles down great, but will only reach full speed if you pull/push the primer knob. otherwise it will die out. I've gone through the carb and fuel system. new fuel pump, fuel lines and tank. Was told it has to be the primer unit, so i removed it and it runs the same. what else should i be looking for?

Sounds like the main jet is partially obstructed.

Do you have the black primer solenoid with the little red lever on it? Sounds like you missed something in the carb or you have an air leak. Does your primer bulb get firm when you first pump it up?

I agree with kbait. Look again at the carb esp the main jet etc

Refer to the parts diagram at http://shop2.evinrude.com/ to ensure every thing is correctly assembled

The fact that you can get it to run at full speed by pumping the primer pretty much confirms that you have a good fuel supply to the carb. I guess pumping the fuel line bulb makes no difference.

Gotta be the carb, or an air leak. I'd check for vacuum leaks at all fuel line connections. I've even seen a split in a pickup tube inside the tank that leaked air. That is, if you're sure the carb is clean. Possibly even a leaky crank seal---fairly rare, I'm thinking.
