Having trouble getting on plane. Motor is hard to start, seems like it's getting hardly any gas. When she does fire up, she acts like she's gonna die when I press on the hot foot to try to get on plane. Have checked the fuel lines, they seem ok. The bulb isn't staying pressurized, replaced it. I took the cover off the carbs and the carbs looked clean, but there was gas leaking down the motor when I had it trimmed down in the drive-way. Completely confused.

It also is idling kinda rough. Could it be just the carbs need to be cleaned? The guy I bought it from said the carbs HAD been cleaned, but don't know how much to trust that.

Reading between the lines, its new to you and you don't really know the service history.

I'd go through it from top to bottom, do a complete servicing,

rebuild carbs with new kits.
Change gear oil, use new seals on drain screws.
Do a compression test and write numbers in your manual (get one)
www.outboardbooks.com
Do a spark test, set spark gap to 7/16th inch by the book.
Post back results.

It's also leaking fuel somewhere, I think. When I took the carb cover off, there was gas everywhere and it was leaking down the motor shaft(had it trimmed all the way down in the drive-way). Just noticed that yesterday. The fuel bulb isn't staying firm despite replacing it, and bogs down when we do get her started and try to get her on plane. The fuel leak, or lack of pressure would cause this?

Sounds like a float is stuck open due to dirt. Take above advice from the top and get a manual, clean out the carbs and fuel system and go from there.

To me, it sounds like the valve on your primer solenoid is open. Do you have an owner's manual or a factory service manual?

No manuals. Don't get paid till wed night(direct deposit). Was trying to find a free download on the internet for this motor but no such luck.

I think you're right. Messed with it for awhile with another member of the TFF and now she starts right up whereas before she was having a hard time starting. I think that solenoid is bad. We sprayed gas directly into the carbs and now she's starting right up.

Just to be sure, the handle on the primer solenoid should be lined up with and adjacent to the cylindrical base for ALL normal operation. Push the ignition key in to activate it for a cold start.

If the primer solenoid valve is not working correctly, it takes about five minutes to add a new cap and valve: part numbers are 0175158 and 0437228. That will upgrade you to the schrader valve as well, so for $2. more you might as well get the injector hose # 0763644. About $25. List price for the 3 parts.

Thanks ezeke! Gonna have to wait till thurs for payday. It's working right now, but think the whole solenoid is gonna need replacing. Thanks to everyone here! :) DEFINITELY will be sticking around here for future help.

REplacing the whole solenoid is expensive, all it needs is the rebuild kit with seals etc.

That's what a few guys on the TFF told me as well. I just called and got a quote for $180 for the whole solenoid, valve and all. Gonna just used the rebuild kit with seals first. I was also told to check the gaskets on the carbs, and it looks like a couple of them are squeezed down tight to the bowls. As in almost non-existant. A mechanic buddy said if they're black, which they are, they were probably not overhauled and the ethanol in the gas has shrunk them. I don't need a torque wrench to take these bolts off the carbs do I? Never worked on a boat motor, but it looks similar to an old car engine. :)

As I said previously you have an unknown quatity in the service area, go through everything top to bottom, rebuild carbs with new kits etc.
Its a lot simpler than auto carbs.
