I bought a parts engine that was supposed to be a 1990 140hp. Get it home and the year is 1986.

I can't find any resources on the differences/changes between the 1988-1990 and 1985-1986 ignition systems. I want to put my 1989 120hp ignition components (they are all brand new) on a 1986 140hp powerhead. I'm assuming I would need to swap the stator and flywheel along with the wiring harness etc.

Is this physically possible or will I encounter mounting issues? Any other guidance on what parts will swap will be helpful as well, the 1986 parts motor is in MUCH better shape than my 1989, except for the electronics. Ideally I'd like to use the 1986 engine but swap enough parts so that my paperwork on my boat for the 1989 matches that of the engine. Granted, the serial of the powerhead, regardless of the rest of the engine is going to be incorrect if I swap powerheads.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I looked at my service manual and they both have the same ignition system (Type II). Don't know if mounting is the same?

the 86' is a completely different block than the 89'. 86' is a 1.8 liter that had carburetion issues, the 89' is the much improved and more powerful 2.0 liter big block. accept for carbs and heads, everythng should swap over ignition wise.
