Just bought the motor Mod. # J140TKC0 / Ser. # G7036486. It looks good, but hasn't run since last season after orig owner repowered. It should start right up what should I do before I turn the key? I have it on a stand right now.

Clean the carbs and install new kits. Also a complete water pump kit and cooling system srevice. New gear oil. No big deal, lots of folks here ready to help.

I'd suggest an OE service manual. It'll be worth it's weight in gold as we progress.

Re: 1986 140 V4 Johnson

Thanks for the info. I have the service man. Also i have an impeller for a 1978 70hp Sea horse Johny, is that compatible. What kit should I get for the waterpump and what else is entaled in the cooling system.

About the carbs after i clean. I got the kits for that 70hp which consisted of gaskets, float, needle valve. Should I replace all that on the 140?

I'm going to put new spark plugs in. Should I do a compresion test and what should the PSI be.

Sorry for the all the questions, I'm just a Boatswaine's mate. I drive them and brake them.

You should see somewhere in the 125 lbs range for compression.

Get the complete BRP OEM water pump kit, just the impeller is a waste of time considering how cheap a complete pump kit is. If you've never done it before on this motor, an OEM shop manual would be helpful also as Dhadley suggested. He's da man, if you haven't figured it out yet!
