1985 Volvo Penta 280 Outdrive - Tilt/Trim Separation

Hey everybody,
Quick question, I am fixing up an old Bayliner Ciera 2450, it has a Volvo Penta AQ260a with a 280 outdrive. Got the Tilt/Trim motor all fixed on the electronic side, started it up and it made a terrible noise - took a look in the part where the worm screw goes (between the mechanical motor and the worm drive) and the bearing had blown (looked like saltwater got in it). My buddy had said it'd be a good idea to take out the whole worm drive portion and open it to make sure there is no more issues on the inside - but I cannot for the life of me get the lower portion to separate from the top portion.

I brought it into the Volvo Penta shop and they gave it a shot but it wasn't budging and they didn't want to risk breaking it. Right now I've been soaking it in penetrating oil every couple hours or so and seeing if it'll break loose but to no avail.

I just wondered if anyone had a similar experience and if they had any words of wisdom.
Thanks!

Let's start with the bearing.
Did you get the bushing out and the cir-clip?
You might be able to 'push' the bearing out by counter rotating the bevel gear with the push rod.
Provided the bearing outer race is not 'stuck' from rust.

My spare has a iron bottom and aluminum top.
So penetrating oil does not help much. The aluminum corrosion digs into the steel.

All you can do is clamp the iron part in a good strong vise and get a good fitting metric box wrench on the top.
Then a long pipe to extend the box wrench.

As I recall, this was extremely tight, but mine did not break.
Later on in it's life, I managed to break the worm gear, which is when I found out how rare and expensive this part is.

hey guys! Alright! so here's the deal, I got it apart, but now I cannot get the bushing out. the bearing exploded, so it was in pieces and came out as such. But now I need to get the bushing out and it will not budge, and I can't get the new bearing in until I can get the bushing out. Any advice?

I did, I did! It all looks good, I cleaned all the old crappy grease of it, but I can't get that damn bushing off (the one where the worm screw fits into the bearing and turns the main large gear). The guy at the Volvo shop said Id probably need to cut it with a dremel, which I do not have, but I have a mini hacksaw that I could use to cut the bushing and then bend it out (i have new bushing anyhow). Does that sound right?

Now you shoud be able to get a long skinny screwdriver.
Benb it to a gentle curve.
Insert it from the upper side of the housing (where the worm gear used to be).
Start tapping the bushing out from the inside, working around so you can get it to wiggle out.
I'll try posting a pic in a minute.

Where did you get a new bushing?
Does it look like the one in my picture (part way out of the housing)?

IF you are talking about this part number 897762. You can buy them easy around $30.
Getting the old one out is a real pain though. I chiseled mine out being very careful not to damage the housing.
Do your self a favor and replace all the bearings when you have it apart.
