Hey from down under folks,
Am having some problems with the gearbox in my 1985 200HP Merc.It has the bullet shaped (Speedmaster??) leg on it
At this stage it doesnt seem to go fully into gear but will drive the boat along at about 1 knot. Upon removing the plugs from the leg, only water drained out, and there was no oil present. There were some small metal shavings on the plug, but nothing significant to suggest that gears had been stripped off.
I have read some of the other topics on gearboxes, but still have some questions
1) How do you remove the leg to inspect the gearbox, obviously the retaining bolts must be removed, but does the prop need to come off?
2) How long did Mercury/ Mariner legs remain the same and is the gearbox the same in the performance/speedmaster leg?
3) Is the replacement of gears in the leg something that can only be done properly by a workshop?
Any suggestions/ ideas would be greatly appreciated.
