1985 Mercruiser 140 timing

Went out Sunday and listened to the thing ping the whole way back! The temp never went over 140. Anybody know the timing on this thing? I don't really want to be messing with it on the water.Hate to buy a book for this one.

timing is 6 degrees BTDC.....at idle...

It could be the fuel..Go up a grade on the octane, and check the vacumm lines for leaks.<br />Of course,it would do more than ping under severe leak, but a minor one will throw it outta whack just enough to make u crazy.
