1985 Johnson VRO Conversion - Fuel Filter

Hi,

I have replaced my first generation VRO pump with the 0438556 mixed gas pump and have removed the VRO, plugged the VRO pulse hole and completely disconnected the oil lines.

My question is:

Do I still need the fuel filter assembly that is in the gas line before the fuel pump?

At first, I thought I did, but then when I went to look for the fuel filter part number to replace it I could only find it under the VRO pump category/link in the Johnson Parts e-catalog. After looking a little deeper into the mixed fuel pump I realized there is a filter/screen built in to the fuel pump. Still I am not 100% convinced that I don't need the Fuel Filter Assembly #394375.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

The screen in your non-vro pump will be all you need.

With today's fuels and ethanol that attracts water, you need a spin-on fuel water separator filter in the boat to protect the engine. That is also a better filter than a screen on the motor.

I looked into a fuel-water seperator - if I am thinking of the same thing it is usually mounted to the boat and looks a lot like an oil filter from a car. I am wondering whether my fuel pump could handle having that in the fuel line as it is only running off a vacuum pulse hole on the engine block.

Genuine factory fuel pumps have drawn gasoline through spin on filters for more than 40 years.
