MOTOR PROFILE.jpgREAR ENGINE PIC.jpg
Can anyone tell me where I can get an accurate value for an '85 Johnson V4 90hp engine that has been completely rebuilt, top to bottom, new lower unit, all new paint and even cover stickers so that it's almost showroom perfect (skeg needs to be repainted) with less than 40 hours runtime? i got this engine and a 16' Little Decker Deckboat in trade a few years ago, have only taken it out a few times since, looking to trade up to aluminum fish/ski boat. Hate to part with the motor, bu I'd rather it went to a good home and got some use. just need to know how much it's worth at this point so I can place an accurate value on the boat & motor combo. Thanks for any help!

The number 1200 popped into my head. Might seem low, but it is almost 30 years old.
It would have to have perfect compression and pass a water test.

You couldnt get a powerhead rebuilt for $1200.

$2200 ish with receipts and a warranty. In any case you might not even have the rings fully seated at 40 hours and the compression test might not tell you anything.

Thanks so much, Whaler...so if it did pass te compression and 'water test', would that increase the vaue? the tilt was also redone (all right before I took possession) and it works great, so...I was actually thinking a little higher, it's been in fresh water its whole life (I knew the guy that owned it before me) and I've only had it in salt twice (flushed thuroughly each time and put up clean and dry). We've both taken real good care of it. would 2500 be too much to ask for the motor itself (if someone doesn't want the boat too)? i was going to list it all for $4k and negotiate from there.

oh, plus the trailer is galvanized, one of those 'tilt' style for ease of loading the boat, all hardware on the boat is aluminum or galvanized, the entire floor was redone and all wood is marine grade, new console, all new wiring and steering linkage...

@ Wired - that's a lot closer to what I was thinking...thanks!

Re: 1985 johnson 90hp v4 value

Basically it is a parts motor if it isn't shown to be running well. The tilt is a big plus. This is just my opinion on all of this, but I'm never in a hurry to buy anything, and I don't pay a lot for older boats. Somebody could fall in love with your rig and pay top dollar. A quick start then flying across the lake makes all of the difference in the world for a sell. But it would be a pain to haul it out to Calaveras just for that.....It would be best to look at the local Craigslist and Boattrader and see what the local market is asking, and then guess at what they are getting since it will be less. I know the boat market is very poor up here in North TX, and we don't have the drought and low lake levels up here depressing things further.

Cool, thanks again for the input, I appreciate all the help I can get.
BTW, some shots of the boat & motor. My friend had it set up for scuba (he is a Dive Master) and took it on lakes all over TX.

You'd get $4K for that here. Location, location, location.
