I have a 1985 Johnson 9.9 that is giving me some grief. I had it out on the weekend and the motor ran pretty good all day, started first pull, idled down and trolled nicely, etc. Towards the end of the day, I opened it up to WOT to cruise to a different part of the lake and when I got there I slowed down to find a place to anchor then the motor died and would not start again.
I don't have the top portion of the air silencer installed and noticed that the bottom portion was totally full of fuel. I removed it and emptied it out then the motor fired but would barely run and only if I gave it a lot of throttle (flooded I'm sure). Once it seemed to clean out a bit, I reinstalled the bottom portion of the air silencer and started the engine again but it started filling up with gas very quickly. I managed to limp it off the lake at WOT without the air silencer to catch the excess fuel but it wouldn't reach rpm and was running very rough.
I will remove the carb and inspect but I had just had it apart before the trip. I assume that the float is not sticking open since the ball gets firm.
Also, I rebuilt the fuel pump last year so I doubt the diaphragm has a hole in it.
Is there any other way this thing can overfuel so badly?
