Ran the motor today on the boat! It was really smooth for a two cylinder! The primer is clicking but isn't priming anything. Rebuild kit? I had a couple problems with the motor bogging down. I'm thinking it's a fuel problem? The leaky primer (cold) could explain it. My whole fuel line might need replacing. It's stiff as a rock because it's so cold outside, normal?

My starter a bit funky. it works though. It will engage and then turn. Maybe my battery is too small? It's only 500CCA

Other than all of the problems! The motor ran nicely other than the idle being hair too low.

Bump... i'm going to get some new hose and bulb. Hopefully then i can prime the dang without exerting too much force.

My hose and bulb assembly is very stiff when it is cold outside. Almost unusable. I keep it inside the garage when not in use and hook it up at the last minute in cold weather.

lol my garage is cold too!!! I just went ahead and bought a new line assembly at bass pro. Gift card :p FREAKING EXPENSIVE! We'll see how this new hose does tomorrow in the cold. Maybe this will fix my issues? Or i can definitely identify it now because I can actually pump the bulb lol!

My primer needs rebuilding D:

Re: 1985 Johnson 2cylinder 60hp

Ran the motor today. It runs WOT fantastically. The idle is still a little funky. I don't though because there is no mid-range throttle! It's either WOT or idle. The motor will just bog when I advance it past idle a little it bog down. If i'm at WOT and I want back it down a bit it will stall. My primer doesn't work but it still opens up so it will let the fuel through from the pressure. If I plane out and hit the primer it will help it not bog, but it's not necessary, just easier.

How do link and sink the YOKE on the throttle cam? Number 71

And how do I adjust the screw for the sleeve, roller thing on the car. Did I explain this right?

FORGOT TO SAY: If I manually open the carbs without advancing the timing it will bog down too.

I'm to try decarbing it now. Maybe it will free up some gum?

How do I know my reed valves arn't bad?

Re: 1985 Johnson 2cylinder 60hp

I tried some seafoam and it seemed to help a bit. I can open the carbs without it bogging down so much but it still does it.

EDIT: I'm thinking i'm going to try the omc engine carbon tuner or merc engine tuner. might be some slow better acting stuff.

Checked the plugs? If they are okay im thinking a thorough carb clean and rebuild might be in order......the faulty primer will only make cold starting difficult.

I cleaned the carbs when I first bought the motor. My primer probably needs to be rebuilt but it still opens and releases whatever fuel pressure in the system into the primer system. The plugs looked ok?

Try spraying some premix down the carb throats when it bogs to confirm it aint the carbs......

Both cylinders are definitely sparking consistently.

Used one can of seafoam spray and one can of Quiksilver power tune. The compression before and after remained the same at about 172 top and 180-185 bottom. About 10-15psi difference. Bare min I guess.

Odd discovery. When I sprayed the seafoam in the top carb it would just rev up and never die. If I sprayed it in the bottom carb it would die pretty easily. Carbs dirty? Reeds? No idea yet? Maybe the top carb is broken lol D:

Tomorrow, I'm going to use the BRP engine tune and let it sit for like 12 hours according to the instructions. It states 3-16 hours. Maybe this will even the compression a little bit more.

Engine still bogs in the mid-range throttle position.

I con't picture a cold-hose problem in Florida. I'm betting on old hose. I can't really follow the rest of what you're describing.

I replaced the fuel line in the engine. Except the primer line I believe. Either way, it's still good.

I replaced the outside fuel line and primer already. The new one is niccce :D

Any ideas on why the engine is still bogging? If the brp doesn't help then the carbs are coming off. As well as the reed plate.

Re: 1985 Johnson 2cylinder 60hp

More info:::It kinda runs cool at idle but it shoots plenty of water out at all rpm ranges. Thermostat might be stuck open but i don't know if this matters or not.

How much should the motor be charging at idle. It puts out about 12.8 volts? but it sometimes fluctuate to 5 or 8 volts and back to 12.

Put down the seafoam/power tune or whatever for a minute and try some premix......if this eliminates/reduces the bogging you will know the problem lies with the carbs.

Wouldn't opening the primer do the same thing?

Apparently so......

If I plane out and hit the primer it will help it not bog, but it's not necessary, just easier.

Entirely up to you if you want to give it go......just trying to eliminate the carbs from the picture so you can move onto something else and not perform unecessary work.

What else could it be? Not pulling enough vacuum or something.

Well, after I put the cleaner stuff in and let it sit, i'm going to take the carbs off to check the needles and stuff.

This is quite the challenge...

I bought 6 new gallons of fresh gas, and used evinrude oil. Exact 50:1 mix.
