Working on a 1985 Evinrude 70 for a friend. Got screwed royally on the boat/motor when he bought it. Compression is great in all 3 cylinders. It was running terrible when he got it(seller ran it on muffs just long enough to claim it ran) Anyway it was misfiring on on cylinder which eventually turned to 2 cylinders misfiring. I replaced the plugs and the switch box and it fires right up. Can run it from one end of the lake to the other, shut it down, starts right back up instantly,5-10 minutes later still starts right up instantly, but shut it down for 1/2 or an hour and it takes forever to get it to start again. Primer bulb stays hard. Using the choke or fast idle doesn't seem to help much. It will start eventually but what causes this? Are these motors prone to vapor lock? Doesn't seem to run overly hot,has a great pee stream. Any ideas what can be causing this? TIA

Hard to say from here but you could assume it was flooding when parked up . If you leave it for a day or so it will like a bit of flooding to start (and it might have dried out a bit ) but after only an hour it might not so , without touching anything else give it all the fast idle you can .......I would actually hold the throttles wide open at the carbs and get someone else to turn the key ( no choke at all ) and if it is flooded it should clear and light up pretty quick . Otherwise its the standard stuff , has the ignition got enough oomph to spark over ⅜ inch on all cylinders . Also pays to check what the compression actually is coz they can feel/sound ok but still be borderline....better than 100psi would be good . Checking timing and throttle link adjustment is important too .
Check you tube for this as there are several vids there and sometime it helps to see someone doing it .🙂

starts great cold but not when warm and has been sitting a while sounds like it could be flooding out well sitting, check float height and needle's for groves

Vro still on it or has it been deleted?

Tell tale stream only tells you the impeller is good so buy an IR gun and shoot around.

Do you know how to test the overheat system? Learn how if you don't.

What are the actual compression values?-----Good numbers are around 135 / 140 PSI on those.----Poor hot start ?----Load test the battery and take starter apart for inspection / ohm check on armature.
