1985 Black Max xr-2

This may be a dumb question but the prior owner of my boat had used a deep cycle battery for the starter battery - is this correct? If not, what size battery should I use?

Not a dumb question at all! No this is not correct. use a 650cca minimum marine cranking battery for starting.

Ideally, you have a cranking battery for the main engine and a second Battery(s) for running a trolling motor.
