Hey All, Hopefully someone can help me out. I have a 1985 85hp Force motor that has a broken latch. The handle just swings free without engaging the mechanism to open the latch. Hense, I can't get the cowling off. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Having one of those engines, I would think the factory would build in some type of access. What has happened is the bolt the holds the catch to the lever has loosened, allowing the catch to come off. I'd bet if you looked at the lifting area of the cover, there might be access after removing a few screws? Then coat hanger the level upward. Lock tite that puppy when you assemble it. Going to look at mine tonite too. I'd like to know if this happens to me.

Try wedging something under the cowl at the bottom center front where it slips over the small metal plate that holds it down, or the metal plate that enters the lower cowl--depending upon your engine. You may be able to bend it enough to get it free then pull up and slide it backward a little. Won't be easy, but nothing ever is.
