I am having a fuel pump problem.I took my boat to a local boat machanic with the problem that i wasnt getting enuogh fuel .So after all the ovious repairs new fuel tank new fuel line new diaphram,The problem still existed. At this point he put on a electric pump that runs constant. This gave me more fuel although it still wasnt the same as before the problem the first started. Also after the electric pump was installed the pump would drain my battery and also i was going through way to much fuel.So I did some more research and was told that i may have head gasket leak so this was also repaired. The problen didnt fix the fuel issue so im still haveing the problem that if i turn off the pump the motor starves of fuel. Can you help??

Re: 1985 85 force outbourd fuel problem

I have never heard of converting a force over to an electric fuel pump. Seems to me I read something here about it being dangerous because of a fire situation. The mechanic should have replaced the three fuel valves and gaskets in the fuel pump as well as the diaphram. I had similar problems with mine and with close inspection I saw two of the gaskets below the fuel valves were broken. The fuel valves are 5 dollars each and the gaskets are 50 cents each. The biggest problem with these fuel valves is two of them are press fit in and damn near impossible to remove without breaking them.

Do you still have the old fuel pump? First thing I would do is spark test, compression test and then link and sync. Maybe someone else here has heard of the electric fuel pump and they can be of help. My feeling is the motors are standard with regular fuel pumps and if you are not getting enough gas you have something else wrong.

Would remove that electric doo hickey and install the old one after rebuilding it as eurolarva said.

Problem could be in fuel pump, carbs, or recirclation system.

How and when does the problem manifest itself? Why do you think it is not getting enough gas to the carbs?

Re: 1985 85 force outbourd fuel problem

I had a Force outboard just recently, and the issue with mine was that the fuel lines that went to the carbs were stiff, brittle and had shrunk in dia. size, I replaced all the fuel lines from the tank to the carbs. and that solved my problems, just remember to use USCG approved hose, I got mine at a US Boat store here in town
