I was out in the boat yesterday and noticed the engine laboring and not able to go full throttle even though the lever was in full throttle
I suddenly heard a snap from the motor and all quit
I was unable to start the engine and had to be towed back
At home I was unable to turn the flywheel by hand, removed all the plugs and still no success
I was able to turn the flywheel with a wrench on the nut, but it was tight
When I put the gear lever in reverse or forward, the prop would turn, in neutral it would not turn as it is supposed to
I recharged the battery and even though:confused: the starter engaged the flywheel, it was unable to turn it

Pls Help

Sounds like you blew your motor up.

You should be able to turn that engine over with your hands with the plugs out. You have a problem in one of two areas, lower unit or power head. You could try dropping the lower unit and see if the powerhead turns over properly, if so you have a lower unit problem. If it still turns over hard pull the cylinder head and see what's going on.

Re: 1985 70 HP Evinrude starting problems

thank you

When I removed the lower screw to remove the gear oil, screw & oil shot out the unit about 3 -4 ft
Will draining, I noticed a metal piece about a 1/4" long fall out as well as metal filings
I removed the plugs again and turned over the motor quickly,
It turned freely and effortlessly

Should I now remove the lower unit and how big a job is it
I am quite mechanically inclined
