1985 50HP Force slow to engage

Motor will start right up, but when you put it in forward, it doesn't engage right away. It idles way up then all at once it pops into gear. Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like linkage / cables are out of adjustment

I would not know where to start there are marks to look for and marks to be made when setting them up .. your best bet would be to get a manual it will walk u though it step by step
