How in the world does one disconnect the shift linkage so I can remove the lower unit? I can barely see the bolt under the lower carb and am pretty sure there is no way to get a wrench on it. Thanks for any ideas

If it were me, I'd remove the carb. It can be done with swivel 1/4" sockets, but it's a pain without carb removal..

My 20 hp 1985 has you take off the intake screens on the lower unit and disconnect the shift linkage there.

Just to make sure I am looking at the correct bolt can anyone tell me if it is the bolt that faces the front of the boat?

Thanks

love2boat

Looking through the Manual, I believe MarkCz is correct. It says to either access the shift rod connector through the water intake screen or through the exhaust housing cover plate on the side of the leg. So it should be a piece of cake. This was the way it was on my 1989 28 HP rude, but ya never know if a different year and model has something different...
