hi how are you all doing?
i have aquired 2 1985 235's complete 25in shafts.
one is to be used for back up parts for the other.

how reliable are these motors if they are maintained?
i have had some one tell me that they are no good for low speed & or trolling.

the plan is to put one on a 1969 20ft thunderbird arapaho cuddy.(cathederal hull)
the boat weighs in at over 2400lbs and were offered with up to a 351 i/o or 200+ ob.

an i getting in over my head using the 235 or should i go to a 150 t0 175
motors.
any help would be appreciated thanx.

Re: 1985 235hp 25in

a lot of the boats of that vintage did not have max hp plates on them. if it does have the plate, do not exceed the recommended HP. the only way you can legally exceed it is to prove the boat meets the following requirements. also make sure the transom is sound. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=191283

yes i know about exceeding hp ratings & on this boat yhere is no CG plate.
thanx

i am more interested in the reliability of motor and if they are worth hanging on to them.

i want 3 things
to have enough power
to be able to cruise
and at times a slow troll to get into tight spots

most important how others who have experience with these motors to give me their inputs.
thanx

wow, with the lack of responses for the 235's - they must be either rare or are not worth commenting about.
i guess i will have to use them and form my own opinion.
thanx

Re: 1985 235hp 25in

This was the last year for the 235. The V6 crossflow was the basic model of OMC for many years. Thousands were sold and ran reliably over the years. What are the compression readings? They will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine. They do have issues with the quality of gas sold today and tend to accumulate carbon around the rings over long periods of time. I would either use the Bombardier XD50 oil, or run a can of engine tuner through the engine annually for maximum service life. The 235's were seemed rated at higher HP than they actually put out.

Re: 1985 235hp 25in

thank you, i dont yet know what comp ratio's.

the guy who sold me the good one, had replaced everything electrical - trying to isolate a problem. then got a good deal on another motor & boat.
before i use it im going to replace all the gaskets that i can, along with rebuilding carbs.

this is my 1st crossflow motor.

i was asked in another post why i got the 235's instead of a 150 or 175
.
after checking the lbs of each i found the 150 to be 385lbs, 175 is 398lbs & the 235 is 400lbs.
so the lbs are within 15lbs of each other.
i also read a post here where Dhadley said the 235 was rated at 175hp at the prop by omc.
and the price for the 2 motors was good for me.

there is just not to many posts on the 235hp- but alot on the 150 & 175.
i can only assume that some of those posts will help.

thanx again for your response
