Hey all, I'm a new member of this community and happy to see so many helpful folks!
I am rebuilding a 1985 Mercury 110 9.8 and in the process of re-assembling the lower unit and upper unit, I wasn't able to quite align the shift knob placement to go through the full range of motion (forward - neutral - reverse). I proceeded to take apart the lower unit and while messing around with the lower shift rod noticed that I couldn't feel 3 distinct positions. Is this how the gearbox is supposed to behave or is there something wrong with my lower unit gearbox? This is odd since I could shift through the different gears smoothly prior to disassembling to rebuild.
Any help is appreciated. I have the repair manual but there are no leads I have found helpful.
