1984 v4 90hp

I'm new to boating so please be easy on me. The other day I took my 84 suntracker out and the 84 model evinrude was a bit hard to start in which I thought nothing about but once started I left the dock and headed down the lake enjoying my cruise after running for about 20 mins I decided to turn around and go back to a spot I seen so we could grill some burgers after being there for about 1 hour I decided to take off again and could not get my motor to start again. It was at the point to almost start but would not. After getting home I pulled the cover off to do a compression test and found one of the plugs only finger tight. My question is would this cause the engine to loose enough compression to act as it did?

I did do a compression and spark test all the cyl in order test 1. 118 2. 115 3. 118
4. 118 and as for the spark it was a bright blue almost white so it seemed ok. My next question I have some wires on my tilt and trim under the motor that look bad can someone point me in the right direction as to removing the tilt and trim so I can repair the wiring. Chances are 75% plus that your carbs need to be rebuilt. You have good compression and spark and the carbs are the likely item. With your being new to boating I would guess that this is also a new to you motor.

You are on the right track...... the carbs are easy to rebuild. I would suggest also getting a manual for the motor. BTW that is a great motor!

Carbs had been rebuilt already forgot to add that work was preformed 1 year earlier. would not think they need rebuilt all ready?

When the engine won't start, pull a couple of plugs and inspect them. Are they wet or dry? If you pump up the fuel line hose bulb, will the engine start? Was the engine tilted up just prior to your no start problem? Are you running the stock VRO pump, or has the engine been converted to the single, small fuel pump?

Check your gas vent too. I "thought" I had an issue this weekend to find out my vent screw had 'tightened itself' enough to create a fuel starvation. Check your bulb in the fuel line and make sure it's hard after sitting like that too.

Yes, finger tight plugs will make your motor run like crap. trim and tilt motors are removed as a component, coating cracked or frayed wires with liquid electric tape is usually sufficient to prevent corrosion and high resistence.
