you're making awesome progress. agree with the other gents, do the transom now......if floor is rotted in rear, transom is too.

Yes..I agree, most of my focus is now on getting the transom out and completing the replacment, before anything else. The deeper I got into the project, the more dry rot I saw in the transom, so... in order to be safe and efficient it has to go now. I could never float the boat knowing that the rot was that far along.

pulled mine out today...didn't look to bad in the boat. SO glad I did, one whole side I couldn't see was rotten. I would have been sick if I found out later.

Same here, didn't look too bad.. what I could get to. Even stuck a pick in it, seemed decent. Look at the pic and you can see how bad it was under the floorboard and under the side support. New transom is under old rotton one...making sure it is an exact replica. Got the motor/drive hole cut today, getting ready for drilling all other holes...BUT I'm a little concerned about getting the exact angle and position of bolt holes pre-drilled. May be best to put the transom in the boat, clamp it and then drill with a drill angle guide.

that's the better plan on the holes, IMHO. i'm going to make a guide from some particleboard scrap glued together into a 3" block and then drilled at an accurate 90 degrees on the drill press.

drilled mine from the old one as a pattern. wasn't real sure which way was best. worked out though, when I slid her in the holes matched up almost perfect.

Good deal...looks like you are moving right along... I have 2 more coats of spar varnish to put on, then cure, then in she goes. I'm going to clamp the transom into the stern and drill. Noticed something interesting, on the old transom... water had migrated into the wood at EVERY single bolt and screw hole over time, no matter how it was caulked or sealed. Thought about putting tar paper between new transom and stern... not sure if anything will work over time. 100_8917.jpg

The through holes in the wooden transom can also be drilled oversized, filled (epoxy) & re-drilled to the correct size. It'd be better then nothing to well soak the through holes w/ spar as well. The oversized & filled thru hole must be sufficiently covered by a washer to prevent the entire 'plug' from pulling through.

Fill them with 5200 before you put the bolts in. Put the bolts in but don't tighten them all the way, after the 5200 hardens then finish tightening. You'll get a better seal.

What I'm trying to say is don't squeeze all the 5200 out.
