It can be done, but you might be frustrated doing it that way. Make sure if you do it that way that you use some thick liquid soap to lube up the boot when you're stretching it over the drive so you don't rip it.
Also, make sure you get some 3M 4200 and thoroughly coat all the screws, holes & put a bead around the transom seal where it contacts the transom. If you seal everything up properly, you shouldn't get any transom rot.
Finally, make sure you put the replacement boot on right side up. The hole in the center is slightly biased toward the top. Some boots have the word 'TOP' molded into the boot while others (like Sierra) have some weird symbols (a double error which should face down & 3 X's - 'XXX' - which should be at the top). If you put it in upside down, it'll kink & you'll start to see tearing within a couple months or less. You
do not want a hole in that boot!
