Can anyone tell me if transom seal/boot on a 1984 stringer drive can be replaced without having to take the outdrive apart? This is on a 1984 Seaswirl Spyder.

Thanks,

Robert

I'm 99% certain it can be. Remove the outer screws, pull the boot away from the transom to expose the long gear clamp holding it to the mid drive, then slip it over the outdrive.

If the transom is wood, press a small slot screwdriver into it below the mid drive. If it goes in more than ?", the wood is rotten. Over time, the screws leak and will soak the transom if the boat is in the water for the summer.

It can be done, but you might be frustrated doing it that way. Make sure if you do it that way that you use some thick liquid soap to lube up the boot when you're stretching it over the drive so you don't rip it.

Also, make sure you get some 3M 4200 and thoroughly coat all the screws, holes & put a bead around the transom seal where it contacts the transom. If you seal everything up properly, you shouldn't get any transom rot.

Finally, make sure you put the replacement boot on right side up. The hole in the center is slightly biased toward the top. Some boots have the word 'TOP' molded into the boot while others (like Sierra) have some weird symbols (a double error which should face down & 3 X's - 'XXX' - which should be at the top). If you put it in upside down, it'll kink & you'll start to see tearing within a couple months or less. You do not want a hole in that boot! :)

Hi i need to do the same thing and I am debating whether to try it without taking the outdrive off. How hard is it to take off the outdrive?

It can be done. there will be a few 4 and 5 letter words uttered. I also sprayed mine with a soap and water mixture to help. however I could also remove the outdrive in about 20 minutes (having had it on and off about a dozen times). I recommend an OEM boot vs the aftermarket. the OEM ones are more, however last a lot longer.
