1984 mercury 50hp

Hello everyone inherited a 1984 Mercury from my dad that passed away. Before he got sick he was tinkering on it and took the flywheel apart chasing a bad stator does anyone know how to put the flywheel back correctly?

I presume you mean the outer flywheel, held on by the 8 bolts?

If so, it is real easy. Drop the flywheel onto the hub and partially thread a couple of bolts to hold it. Remove all spark plugs.

Stick a screwdriver into the top spark plug hole and turn the flywheel until it shows top dead center.

Now remove the two flywheel bolts and turn the outer flywheel only, until the timing mark shows TDC. Now install all the flywheel bolts with some blue locktight.

Remember, the flywheel can only be put on 1 of 8 ways. So you only need to know TDC of #1 cylinder within 45*, since 360*/8 is 45*.

Thank you very chris1956 much for your response, I went to do as you said yep if I only knew where to line tdc marks up too I can not find any type of pointer only one empty hole where bolt could go between flywheel and power head. Any ideas

Take a look at the crowleymarine web site and see if that motor has a timing pointer, that fits on that bolt. If so, you had best get one.

You should still be able to find the correct position of the flywheel if you line the tdc mark on the decal with the center of the timing pointer bolt.

Sir your info was awesome thank you very much I moved it 2 holes and it's spot on compression was 130 all holes replaced plugs water pump and replaced trigger stator and switch box cleaned carbs run about hour tonight. First time in 11 years smooth as a kitty putting it in water this weekend once again thank you for your help.

You should still check the timing and make sure the carb is synched to the spark advance. Otherwise bad things can happen.
