I just bought a boat with a 1984 Mariner 4 cylinder 80 HP outboard motor. The motor will start after I use some starter fluid in the carbs and run for alittle while then die. It will stay running at full idle but when you lower it down it starts to hick-up, then dies. Also, while the engine is in the water it is worse. It looks like the throttle/idle controls, cables have been replaces very recently. I have good compression and spark, also the fuel bulb stays hard. Any ideas?

Sounds like it is starving for fuel. Might be a good idea to check the low speed jet settings. If you pump the fuel bulb, with the engine stay running? Fuel pump is suspect.

Don't use starter fluid on a 2-stroke motor. They need the oil lubrication. Intead, spray some pre-mix into the carb throat if you need to. In a pinch, something like wd-40 may help to start it in an emergency.

I am new at this, so I have no idea how to check the low speed jet settings. How would I go about doing that? Also, thank you for the info.
