Re: 1984 Johnson 70 HP needs stator?

Took her out this morning. She started okay after a couple of tries, but started nonetheless. Idling is not good...she won't stay idling, and you have to coax the acceleration when getting underway. Eventually she jumps up and screams down the waterway! A real speed demon, but I can feel a "bump" like a mis-fire, every once in a while. There are a few marinas east of me, perhaps I'll take her down and let someone certified take a look.

the people in this site have been very helpful to me also. It is best to learn how to service your own motor and yours is an easy one..all you need is a mutli meter, DVA adapter, spark gap tester, long needle nose pliers, socket/wrench set, screw driver set, a roll of electrical tape, manual and the CDI electronics link.(http://www.cdielectronics.com/).and you will be twice the mechanic of the guy you went to. I have learned to diagnose problem electronics with great precision. Stator, power pack, timer base, rectifier/regulator, flywheel, wiring...I am now a certified Iboats graduate OMC mechanic...LOL

Get yourself a factory service manual, and order 3 carb kits and a water pump kit from iboats (unless you know the water pump impeller is less than a couple years old).

Click the "Top Secret File" at the top of this forum, and refer to the threads on compression testing, carb rebuilding, and water pump service. Any questions not answered there, just ask.

you'll save at least $500 now (on the carb and water pump service), and $thousands down the road.

You got it jtexas! Ordered all but the factory service manual...those buggers are hard to find. Thanks!

just popping in to ask, did you heatshrink or otherwise isolate the damaged wire so that the issue does no occur again, i had this issue on a past engine and found that after i heatshrunk and repaired all the wires i could get to she ran like a dream.... all the wires were just a lil brittle on that one, i just ask cause if you got one wire that isnt in good shape another likely isnt either.

Sean - I taped them for now to isolate to make sure THAT was the problem. Seems it was. I thought about the heated shrink wrap, but also thinking about the liquid plastic you'd dip your tools in to plastic coat them with something like this stuff:

Re: 1984 Johnson 70 HP needs stator?

i have used liquid tape/tooldip, the only way i was ever satisfied with it was painting it on then heat shrinking over it while wet....heat shrink seems to be more resistant to abrasion which can easily occur on a vibrating engine. they also make heatshrink with goo in it...when you heat it to shrink it weeps a sealant out and makes the fitting waterproof.

just my thoughts.

Re: 1984 Johnson 70 HP needs stator?

IMHO, the permanent fix is to replace the wires. You'd need a set of pin insertion/removal tools otherwise risk mangling the connectors. And this is maybe the one place I can think of where I wouldn't even consider using other than original wire colors.

Not that I'm averse to temporary repairs of the type you guys are talkin bout (one of my trailer bunks is held in place with 2 bungee cords -- a temporary fix from about 4 1/2 years ago).

I read somewhere, temporary is about 6 years...after that it's considered permanent. You are well within the limit. ;)

Hey jtexas...I checked and you can buy the liquid tape in yellow. ;-)

Re: 1984 Johnson 70 HP needs stator?

For those interested. Rather than the repair the wiring on the coils, they were cheap enough (about $25 per) so I replaced them (yes...from iboats). The PO had replaced the top coil. When cranking previously, I'd have to push the throttle and you could forget about idling. With the three new coils, it starts at first touch and idles great. Maybe I'll take out this weekend and give a spin. Thanks for all the tips!
