1984 Force 85 carburetor throttle shutter

Hello all,

Hey guys, thanks for your earlier help with my fuel mix problem. I now have another question...

My engine fires right up, no problem, but has no power whatsoever (I know; get a bigger motor!), so I suspect throttle linkage. At full throttle, it is the same as in Idle. The shop manual indicates that the carburetor throttle plates should be "closed at rest". Mine appear wide open. To clarify, there appear to be two throttle plates in each carb (total of 3 carbs); one 'inner' and one 'outer'. The inner plate is opened and closed by the throttle rod, while the outer plates are connected together by the carburetor link rod. The inner, throttle-controlled plates are, in fact, closed at rest while the outer, carburetor link rod-connected plates are wide open. These are controlled by a solenoid which, at rest, holds these plates open. If these outer plates are supposed to be closed at rest, then I suspect it is a faulty solenoid. Does this sound right to any of you out there? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

The outer plates should actually be open.
These are your choke shutters.
When you push the key in, it should activate the solenoid and close the choke shutters. Release the key, shutters will open.

Does the engine rev at all?

is the throttle cable moving?
Is it moving the throttle on the carbs?
Are they throttle shutters opening?

What Roscoe said. Also do you have water muffs? If so does the motor run better on the muffs then in a lake or test tank?

Re: 1984 Force 85 carburetor throttle shutter

thx again for you help. I'm a complete newbie with this boat, I got it about a month ago.

The engine only revs *slightly*. Maybe a 5% increase in RPM. When I push the throttle forward, about 90% is 'play' until it tops out at what should be maximum throttle, but as I say, it's only slightly above idle speed. When I push forward the throttle, the cable barely moves the entire throttle assembly (throttle rod, pick up arm and cam). If I detach the assembly, I can manually open/close the throttle plates, hence my suspicion that it was the throttle cable that is the culprit. So, I figured I'd adjust the cable, but I have the Seloc manual and it was unclear as to the difference in those throttle plates (so, thanks so much for the clarification). Since reading another post (I believe it was yours, Eurolarva), I've ordered the Clymer repair manual.

The Seloc manual indicates to "loosen the screws on the carburetor link rod so that the throttle plates will move separately". However, the screws on the link rod that controls the throttle plates (rather than the choke plates) don't loosen, they have to be removed. The screws on the choke plate link rod CAN be loosened, so those are the ones that I loosened. So, I guess I need to go back, and take out the proper screws so I can adjust the proper throttle plates and see if that corrects the problem.

And, I do have water muffs, but it runs the same as in the water. BTW eurolarva, I was born in Golden Valley. (Go Vikes!).

Yikes. Don't use the spell check feature! It messed up my post. I was able to edit it, so I corrected it.

Okay, then, never mind! I figgered it out. Total newbie, cadet. Going to slip quietly away and sulk in the corner and hope nobody notices me. Thanks for helping out. I will go now...

Well you are right about the spell checker and the Go Vikes was good. So I am fine with it. I am now in Brooklyn Park but grew up in St Louis Park. We were practically neighboors.
