I cranked my '84 40hp last week and never put it in gear- I only let it idle for about 5 minutes. It was running very lean (white smoke) and then let go of some oil from around the prop/ exhaust area. Any ideas of how to fix this or what it is? It has been sitting for the winter. Thanks.

Was the engine winterized and fogged before it was stored. Could just be the fogging oil burning off.

then let go of some oil
Assuming this is exhaust discharge and carbon (black), and not lower unit oil.

1 check the compression
2 if compression is reasonable, then do a decarb of the engine. (the decarb process)
3 use fresh fuel

Thanks for the quick reply- I am a neophyte with outboards for sure. To answer- no, it was not winterized and yes, I used the old fuel. The discharge was definitely black and most of it ran straight to the ground as oil. Some sludge did build up slightly on the prop. I'll clean out the carburetor. Thanks. Any other suggestions are welcome.

If you do the decarb (remove carbon from the powerhead with the decarb process) you will flush lots of that black crud out of your engine.

You should do this, as the carbon builds up in the engine, it can cause troubles, like broken rings and destroyed engines.

A periodic thorough decarb is recomended by the manufacturer. Click the link in my first post, and atleast read about the decarb process.

NCDave,

Ditto, "roscoe".

2-stroke engines are dirty. You'll see a lot of "stuff" coming out of the exhaust.

Replace your lower unit fluid. Replace as necessary. Do not forget, new gaskets for the fill/drain plug screws.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their help and advice- it sure helps me save money when I have to take her to the shop. It's my first boat and she's a bear to keep runnin' but worth every cent when I'm trolling the flounder and redfish holes. Thanks again.

Yes, I had muffs on it with water flowing through and the block never became hot to the touch.
