Greetings to All,

New to the forums, so I will get right to it. I own a 16.5 Ft bass boat with an 1984 Evinrude 115hp v4 w/vro (but bypassed).

Problem 1:
When I purchased the boat, all the gauges were original, and not working, so I proceeded to replace all gauges, ie:(tach, trim, fuel, volts, etc.), originally the only operating gauge was the tach, but it would work intermitently during trips out on the river, so I replaced it and the new tach does the same but to a lesser degree, (Bugs me)...

Problem 2:
I replaced the volts gauge, and started noticing that while the engine runs, the voltage readings were swinging up & down, from 12.0 to 17.5 Volts, after a while settling on 13.4 volts, this is confirmed on my GPS Mapper, which displays voltage as well, I thinking bad voltage regulator...

Problem 3:
While running the boat, some days, I can reach WOT of 5500 RPMS, (easily & what I consider normal operation), other days, I have have to work to get the engine to reach 4800 RPMS, Also while running, the engine seems to surge while cruising, 4000 rpm, then 4200 rpm for 2-3 seconds, then back down to 4000rpm, this happening intermitently...

All three problems from what I have researched on this forum, points to the rectifier/regulator not working properly, and volts & tach problem seem to reflect this, my question is if the rectifier/regulator is acting up, would it affect the ignition system and my loss of rpm's?

Any feedback on this topic would be helpful,

Thanks in advance for any help
Astroglass Ted

Re: 1984 Evinrude 115HP Voltage / Tach Problems

Welcome to iboats. :)

1&2 are probably a bad voltage regulator. The leading cause of VR failures lies at the battery. Crossed, corroded, or loose battery connections will damage the VR. Come to think of it, check your battery connections right now. It'll do that if the leads are loose or corroded. The VR may not have fried ... yet.

It would be unusual for all the gauges to be bad, but you're by saltwater. Anything can happen when that salt starts eating at things.

3 is a separate problem from 1&2. You're losing a cylinder either due to lack of spark or fuel. Or your oil/overheat warning system is being tripped and limiting RPMs (I don't think this is the case). Pull the sparkplugs to see how they're burning. If one looks different from the others, you have a starting point. It sounds like you have an intermittent spark problem on one of those, but there could be something floating around in a carb, too.
