Bought the boat in this condition 6 years ago when I was 18 and have never knew where it was leaking from until now. the boat sat for a while and am now getting back into boating a lot and want to fix this!

What will be the best, most cost efficient way to go about fixing this. This is jus an old fishing boat, nothing facy here..
It is 15' long with a 40 hp Evinrude. Notice all the water coming out the leak and back of boat also.

I read this in another forum and was thinking of doing it this way:

Here are the pics of the hull. and the crack:

Welcome to iBoats!
There's No "Cost Effecient" way to fix it. Since water has been penetrating to the interior all this time the foam on the inside is soaked and water logged and going to need to be removed and replaced. Stringers are probably bad as well. Even if they have survived at the very least the deck above the damage area will need to be removed, the waterlogged foam removed the interior of the hull around the damage keel ground down and layers of 1708 Biaxial Cloth applied. The same will need to be done to the outside of the hull as well. The foam will then need to be replaced as well as the deck. We can help you effect all these repairs and you can DIY all of them. It just takes, time, effort and a bit of money.

Yea didnt think bed liner wold fix it was just hoping it wasnt as bad as it is. Im jus tryna go fish haha.

So dang I would start by removing the deck? and you're probably right, the deck does need replacing its weak near the drivers footing area. noticed water all up there too..

There is a live well right above the area i need to access where the main crack is.

What exaclty are the stingers?

I might as well re do the electrical while im at it because most of it is old.
.
There goes my bass fishing season! damn!

Would'nt mind rebuilding the boat I guess.

Stringers are the main structural element of the boats hull. Do a search here on the forum for Replacing Stringers, Transoms, and Decks. You'll get and education..

This will help get you started..."Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms"

pulled up most the bottom deck..

This was the most damaged area, the other stringers were solid except for this one.

The foam inside was all good. BUT how am I suppose to get to the cracked hull?

Hey Dro, nice looking bass boat you have there. If you want, you can check my thread out. I'm fully restoring a boat very similar to yours. I'm thinking that to get to everything you need to get to, you may have to separate the cap from the hull. If you're this far, it would just be easier to go ahead and remove the foam, check the stringers and transom for any issues and replace/repair as needed. Then re-foam and re-deck. Just my 2 cents.

Re: 1984 Bass Champ 15' cracked hull. PICS. need advice please!

The Crack is prolly directly under the center stringer you'll need to use a sawsall to cut out the stringer to gain access to the crack. You will then grind the hull smooth down to fresh glass and then apply a layer of CSM and then two layers of 1708 Biaxial glass to the area. You can then replace the cut out portion of the stringer. Have you done a thorough inspection of the rest of the stringer(s) to ensure they are not rotten and the transom as well. Boats of this vintage and especially since you bought the boat with it being in this condition, it's highly likely it's got major issue elsewhere as well. Since you've started you might as well do it right and finish it. JMHO!!!:)

Dont know if I have the space.. really dont know what to do dang. My friend wants me to get anther crappy boat and thorw my engine on a nother crappy boat..

Im thinking why not throw $1000 into this one, and have the peace of mind that I got a solid boat..

even if it is more no problem. Im stubborn and also like to prove people wrong hahaha. So i think i want to keep her and restore it all in my drive way. :D

So should I start by getting the cap loose? Reomoving the motor? Or start ripping up here?

Or here?

What is going to be the best way to remove the rivets?

Hey Dro,

I'm glad to hear that you're planning to restore your boat. Just to give you an idea, I will go through 20 yards of 1708 biaxial, 30 yards of 1.5 ounce CSM, 15 gallons of polyester resin, 2 sheets of 3/4" plywood and 4 sheets of 1/2" plywood. My total investment in materials alone will be around $1500. From the pictures it appears that your stringers are completely shot, I would assume that the transom is as well. Honestly, at this point the project becomes a labor of love and something that you're ok with putting money into. You will most likely not get your investment back if you sell the boat within a few years. With that said, if it's something you plan to keep or you're ok with a project just be ready to spend the money that's required to do everything right. As far as the rivets, they sell a special drill bit to remove rivets or you could just use a drill bit that is slightly larger than the head of the rivet and drill them out. You may have to follow up with a punch to remove the remainder of the rivet from the hull. Again, I think my thread might be helpful in giving you an idea of what it may take to restore your boat back to excellent condition.

Today I talked my friend in to helping me with this project. He thought I was crazy at first but I talked him in to it haha.
I cleared up the deck removed the trolling motor. My helper drilled out the rivets pretty easily and I followed by removing the rub rail, old adhesive and some screws.

question:(of MANY MORE to come ) Am I going to end up filling these holes with glass ?

I am definitely paying close attention to your thread JFas. Thank you for the inspiration also.

Also have been watching and reading FriscoBoater's thread, the 89 glastron thread and the others also.

Those are my learning guides along with other videos on youtube!

Maybe some of them but you'll put it back together with stainless screws right back into some of the existing holes.

also, measurements..? Think I read I should take some measurements before I pop the cap?
Need to remove the motor next along with steering. Then keep on trucking / learning as I go! Want to be back on the water fast!

Take a billion pictures to help you re-assemble her. It's just like an erector set, but the cost will be in the new materials, and your time. Don't expect to get anything back except a safe running boat. The $$ will not be there when you decide to sell. But you will know it's safe, because you did it!!

Dro,

Yes, definitely take measurements from side to side on the hull. Better yet, if you can either brace the sides of the hull with something. A lot of people have just used 2x4's extended from the boat trailer. In my case I marked every 2 feet down the hull and braced the hull side to side to keep the hull in close to the same shape so that refitting the cap should go easily. I'm at the point in my restoration now that I will actually fabricate braces out of plywood and glass to hold the shape and I should be able to remove my braces after that step.

Lookin' good. Stay positive, read this site and definitely watch Frisco's YouTube videos. He's done a fantastic job of documenting his restorations step by step.

JFas

Here's a shot of what I did for bracing the hull.

Re: 1984 Bass Champ 15' cracked hull. PICS. need advice please!

Ok today I started to collect some of the new wood im goin to need to replace the old rotted wood. I got the wood for the main stringers but these embedded smaller strigers I am having a hard time on deciding what to do.

Dont know what kind of wood it is or what to use to replace it with.. I cant find exact wood this size at the moment. Either slightly too thick, to thin, to wide etc.. What do you guys suggest..?
