3 seperate coils to 3 seperate spark plugs..... Top, Middle, Bottom

Top coil part number is 582106
Middle coil part number is 582508
Bottom coil part number is 582106

Just not running right....I rebuilt the carbs with brand new omc parts and measured the floats twice!
Was on the water yesterday and just couldn't get full power...almost but just not running right. No tach yet..sorry!

I checked the color/condition of the spark with an inline ignition spark checker.

Top coil barely lit up.
Middle coil was blue lightning.
Bottom coild was blue lightning.

Easy...replace top coil.......BUT BUT BUT The coils on the motor now are different part numbers and are not superceding ones. Local OMC dealer only has the 582508 coil instock. Can I use it?

HMMMMM..........any input is, as always, appreciated!

I would swop the top coil with any one of the other 2 first , if it does the same thing , then start with the coil ,

if you gonna do that its easier to just swop the wires at the power pack they are numbered 1 , 2 , 3 starting with 1 at the top , take the plugs out , cause all you will be doing is just change the firing order , its easier , to do it that way to see where the problem is coming from ,

Boob----bit of misunderstanding. The part number from OMC is 582106 for my motor. I have that part number on the top and bottom coils on my motor. The middle coil on my motor reads 582508

go t the power pack there are 4 wires that come from the censors 3 of them go t the right hnd side of the power pack the other 1 goes t the left k the 3 are numbered 1 , 2, 3 the top 1 is no 1 wire no2 below no3 below dat one .put no 1 wire where no 2 is & no2 in no 1 place , put the plug in the cap hold it t the motor & turn da key ,& see how the plug goes , if the spark is good den u have problem no 1 wire & NOT THE COIL >

Read manual and completed the Ignition Coil Resistance Test on all 3 coils.

Top coil read 246 ohms
Middle coil read 247 ohms
Bottom coil read 248 ohms. Spec is 225-325

Good??

Just swap the bottom coil with the top one. If the problem goes with the coil and # 3 not lighting up, you know it's a bad coil. If you still have the lighting up prob on # 1, you have a bad pack or timer base.

The coils are hard wired in to a plug. I would have to cut 2 of the wires and and "swap" them, tape up and check??

It's not like unscrewing a wire terminal and replacing it with another

As i scour through my nanual.....I believe you are reffering to a power pack of an earlier year motor than mine. Mine is 1984 CD 3 ignition.

Thanks for your help and taking the time.

I found the power pack output test........I yelled for my wife to hop on the boat and get ready to turn the key.....it's 10:30pm here. I'm sure you can figure out how this one is going to end..... Guess I'll have to test it in the AM. LOL

A 1983 model does not use "screw on" wires on the pack. The 70hp packs that used screws to hold the wires were last used in 1977.

What is the model number for your motor? There is a possiblility that someone 'mixed and matched' to make a motor out of used pieces and parts.

Re: 1984 75hp ignition coil confustion!

I think some confusion may exist for the coil swap as you may not realise that all you have to do is push the pins for the coils out of the amphenol plug that all 3 go into...now you can swap the coils making sure the wire for position #1 in the amphenol plug goes to the top cylinder, Pin #2 goes to middle coil, etc...mark the bad coil<top I believe> before swapping...now determine if the no spark coil is still not sparking or is the good coil, now in position 1 on the amphenol plug, not sparking?...if the bad coil doesn't work in it's new position then it needs replacing.....if the coil swapped to Position #1 is not working then you've got to move up the line to the powerpack or timer base..boobie said the same thing with a lot fewer words in post #12
