Mechanical gearcase (as far as I know)

I am taking apart the lower unit (water in gear oil / metal on magnetic screw ). I have the manual (clymers) and have follwed the instructions. I am up to the pinion nut removal / prop shaft removal stage.

Prop, propshaft bearing housing, etc. are off.

Reverse gear, washers, etc. are out.

Shift lever cover is off.

Upper drivershaft bearing housing is off.

Propeller shaft is in.

Pinion nut is on but loosened.

Gear shift lever is still in and in forward.

So, here's the problem:

I can't get the pinion nut or gear out as the manual instructs, as the propeller shaft is in the way, although I was able to loosen the nut.
I even had the nut off of the threads, but the shift dog is in the way of letting the pinion nut come all the way out.

I have tried removing the propeller shaft without any luck. I have tried moving shift lever / push and pull on propeller shaft in everay combination but propeller shaft will not come out. It moves an inch or so out, but hits something and won't come out.

1) Do I have to remove propeller shaft before removing the pinion nut and gear?

2) If so, how do I get it out?

3) How does pinion gear come off of driver shaft (slides off after removal of nut / threaded on / other)?

The clymer's manual says to remove pinion nut and gear before removing propeller shaft, but I don't see how to get it out.

I hope I have posted all of the details. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The pinion gear is on a taper to the drive shaft. It take's a special puller to remove, if the drive shaft will not come free on it's own. The pinion gear, and shift rod must be removed to pull the prop shaft with it's forward, and shift linkage.

ok, I think I get it now.

The drive shaft pulls up, then the pinion gear and nut will come out through the propeller shaft housing.

I didn't realize the gear was pressure fit on the shaft. The manual makes it sound like it comes right off.

I'll go back to it.

Thanks

hopper
if the nut is still on the drive shft threads remove the drive shaft bearing housing. shift the unit to reverse. smack up sharply on the propshaft with your hand. the object is to use the dog to push on the nut and break the seal between the two tapers. do not do this if the nut is not on the threads as thread damage to the drive shaaft may occur and make sure the driveshaft bearing housing is removed. once the drive shaft is out of the way shift into reverse and remove the shift rod and withdraw the propshaft/fwd gear and shift housing assy. in fwd the shift lever may not clear the case.

Rodbolts method works about 9 times outta' 10...then you get that No. 10. If you get #10, chuck the drive shaft up in a vise between two pieces of brass or some material that will keep the teeth of the vise from biting in and tighten the vise up good. Put a piece of 2x4 against the gear case housing and smack it sharply with a hammer. This should pop the #10 lose.
