1984 15 hp evinrude water pump

do i disconnect the shifting linkage up top or when I drop the foot can I disconnect it there do I have to take the carb off to get to the linkage

Do yourself a big favor and get the shop manual for your motor or hit the reference section of your library. As to the question - the top.

Uhhhh.....I think solittle got his ups and downs reversed. Tim, when ya' drop the lower unit, there will be a link that disconnects the upper shift rod with the lower shift rod. Remove the upper screw in the link. Helps to put the engine in forward to.
