I am looking to buy this 1983 bayliner capri with the volvo 270 outdrive. Took it out on the water this morning and it fired up and ran great for sitting in my buddies barn for the last 2 years. Got it up on plane and backed down to idle, then there was a clatter type of noise coming from the back side of the engine compartment. Took the cover off and listened a little more and determined it was not the engine making this noise. The noise is not consistent, but it did not seem to change at different speeds, idle, forward or reverse. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Primary drive shaft bearings, u-joints, drive coupler spring loose. How does the drive bellows look?

What engine does it have?

The engine is a 4 cylinder. Don't know the exact size. 19' Bayliner Capri. The back of the outdrive has the number 270 on it. Because this is not my boat yet, I am curious how much I should pay for a boat with this kind of noise coming from the outdrive. I will have to get permission from the owner to start taking things apart. Are there any obvious non invasive things I can do to check this out without taking too much apart?

A failed bellows will cause water to get into places it shouldn't. Ujoints, water in the drive, water in the primary drive shaft bearings, etc. The engine has to come out to replace the noisy bearings in the flywheel cover. The upper gear box will have to have bearings replaced and reshimmed.
It's an old boat with a good engine and drive when they work. When not maintained properly, they are VERY expensive to repair.
That failing bellows that costs less than 100 bucks, can cost several thousand to repair with labor costs. If you can't fix it yourself, find a better boat.
