My 1983 OMC Seadrive trolls at 7mph all day long, but as soon as I get on it it revs to 5,000 rpms, goes for about 100yds and then bogs down and usually just revs up and stops??? Any ideas??? THANKS!

If the engine sounds normal, but the boat just isn't going anywhere,(except in idle), you have a spun hub in the prop. This can be sent to any prop shop and rehubbed for under 40buks.

Rickster,

I do not think a spun hub is your problem. You say it revs then bogs down, I assume you mean-quits running.

Does it restart? If so, how well?

Sounds like a fuel or air starvation issue.

Thanks for the response guys:
12Footer - I had the prop redone.
DJohns19 - I don't know much about motors, but hare's what has been done since I bought it: new gas tank, new starter, new head gaskets, new plugs and wires, new thermos, rebuilt carb. I think you might be right on the starvation issue because the primer ball doesn't bouce back and it revs ok until under load. It restarts after a few minutes, or if I pump the primer ball again. I have to be careful not to flood it though. If I wait long enough it will always start (no more towing home!) I will tighten all fuel connections and re-clamp all hoses and lines from tank 2 primerball 2 gas/water sep 2 fuel pump 2 carb. I had all this work done - but I have never looked at the water pump or exhaust stuff - could this be a problem?

New clamps all the way from tank to carb. Tried separate 6 gallon tank. New plugs. Used carb cleaner. Idles a lot smoother, but still no power under load, or goes for a short distance (50-100yds) then bogs down. Any other ideas???? Thanks!

p.s. Learned not to start engine with plug not tight in head. Plug shot out about 15' and dragged wire with it to the bottom of the canal. Almost took out my father! Sorry Pop!
