1983 Johnson 35hp; Impeller removal

Good day:

I have removed the lower end of a 35hp Johnson with the intention of replacing the impeller.

Is there a trick to removing the impeller, plate and gasket?

I was hoping the three items would simply slide up and off the drive shaft but was wrong; they are lodged into place (specifically the impeller, though it does rotate).

I don't want to use too much force (tapping and prying) to respect the sensitive nature and position of the drive shaft.

I am hoping there is a simple technique or trick.

I appreciate some direction.

from my experience all the parts slide up once you unbolt it. brass spacer slides up, housing slides up, impellar slides up, bottom rub plate sildes up gaskets etc. Now the impellar is either held in place with a pin, or a wedge so be carefull if you start banging on it. your new impellar will give you an idea of what it uses. Also the impellar's collar is brass, where as the shaft is steel. take a real good look at everything as your taking it off, helps putting it back together easier.

I think your should have a plastic wedge locking the shaft to impeller for rotation as does my 1980 35hp. I didn't have any problems at all removing the old one, but it could sit tight if it has been there long. (Or a wrong impeller.) The impeller along with all other parts should slide up the drive shaft easily enough, try nudging the impeller a little counter-clockwise first.
