We'll I went out and checked my setup and and I have four valleys or four threads showing on that rod that timing advance rod. So you need to back your rod out so that it has more threads on the side that doesn't right now so that you only have four valleys or four threads exposed on the side that has alot of threads showing currently. I will get out there and take a picture. It has been a busy day since I walked in the door. My wife found a cheap, good used, Intex Swimming pool, 15 foot X 4 foot round pool so I had to go with her and get that and do some other errands and just got back home. Hope the setup on m y motor will help you out on your motor.

Bubba.... Upload the pics to Photobucket (Free), then set your cursor over the pic in Photobucket which causes various choices to appear. Click on the "image" choice which copies the pic. Now simply click paste in the quick reply area. Hold the pic pixel width down to about 500. www.photobucket.com

I will do that today thank you very much. Yeap, I really believe that his timing is advanced way to much and that is why it is racing on him at startup. Mine did the same exact thing whenever I brought this motor from a guy that had it on his old fishing boat and I took it off his boat to replace the 25 horse Johnson that was on my Pontoon boat and when I went to crank it up it raced up to and, I think, past 2500 RPM at idle and I immediately shut it off and figured out the timing was advanced too much on that engine.

When this adjustment is set correctly, what timing should i be reading with a timing light at idle?

i'm watching this post as well , as my '85 70hp is acting up . mine stalls when i put it in gear and give it gas . runs in reverse . i originally thought it was a broken shift cable shorting out in the control box , fixed it , still stalling out . so i'll be taking the laptop outside and checking out my system . tnx, joe ,.....

Hang in there Carp! I know the feeling of motor trouble... It's the only thing stopping me from a splash as u know! You got some great minds working with ya! I'll be watching to see how the issue gets sorted out

I ended up replacing the cables and making an adjustment to the linkage between the throttle lever and the carb cam and everything seems to stroke nicely. Waiting on a motor part so i will update when she gets running.

i had a bad case of filthy dirty carbs , high speed jets . runs like a champ . i'm heading over to boat names now, i'm thinking Moves Like Jagger ,...old but has a lot of kick left in her . good luck w/ your problem carp .
