Hey folks!!

I have a 1983 Evinrude 35HP and I started to have the sudden jerking/in and out of gear symptoms of stripped amd skipping gears in the lower unit. After getting home, I drained the lower unit oil and it was milky 😫..

Weighing my options, I am thinking I want to find a working lower unit and swap. What years would be compatible with my motor? Using the forum's search function, I believe that it is a long shaft?

Thank y'all in advance!!

Photo is from last spring at Odell Lake in Oregon ✌😁

There's quite a few years and lots of hp range....25, 30, 35hp.

Easier to look at the parts breakdown if you see or hear of a motor for sale.

You understand that the lower end failed because you didn't check and maintain it right? It takes awhile for water to ruin it. Change your gearcase oil every fall/winter no matter how much you run it and if you see water....a simple seal kit is easy.

These engines need very little work to run almost forever.

Ohh yess, I do.. I did notice a gease spot in the gravel/grass where I had it parked and I wrote it off as some 2 stroke oil. When I refilled the lower unit oil this spring I did note it was "less" than usual. Also in the 3 or 4 years I have had the boat I have been "easing it" i to gear, assuming that would be genetler on the 40 y/o outboard 😂.. Only learned a few weeks ago that a sure shift is better on the clutch dogs 😅..

The last trip it would pop in and out of gear and I was also having a higher than usual idle.. I went to drain the oil this time, it was way low and I could see maybe a leak around the prop shaft that I did not see before. Oil was low, milky. No noticable metal tho.. 🤔

Every season when I changed the lower unit oil I put new o-rings on, even if they never seemed to be bunged up too badly.

Maybe if I refill it, the gear-symptoms may ease?

If it was "jerking in and out of gear" in both forward and reverse than I'd say you have the linkage adjusted wrong.

Small chance it's your prop....you would hear the motor wind up though.

Oil won't save it if the dogs are rounded off.

No " granny shifting " is allowed as that is bad for the clutch dog and lugs on the gears.

well if the thing is up the creek and it is not an adjustement issue why not take the GC apart ( try utubes) and look -see what is wrong. Maybe a few parts need replacement to get you going. Of course GC swap is easy but you never know what you get when used .
