I'm looking at a 1983, 50 HP Merc. Anybody had any experience with this engine? I plan on checking compression and lower unit oil. What else should I look for or should I stay away totally?

I very much appreciate your responses. I love this board and it's because of the wealth of information you folks share. This is what the world should be like!

Terry G.

These really are great engines,in my opinion anyhoo. But do the checks you mentioned above. The best engine can be reduced to garbage in less than one season,if mistreated...Hmmm. Nice name for that boat that is in my driveway ("Miss Treated" ).
Ask how long ago the impeller was changed, how long it has been since it has seen use,and if he has a shop manual that might go with it (you are going to want one anyway).
If still attached to the boat, ask if he will go for a sea trial if you spring for fuel and clean the boat afterwards.
That would sure be a plus.

Hello Terry G.
I would insist on a running demo. Unless your buying parts (junk). When the motor is not mounted to a boat this can be a challenge. I take along all the things nessasary to check and run the engine.Make a little engine stand, get a garbage can,and ear muffs, batt, gas, etc. If seller has any problem with any of this, guess its not your motor. good luck have fun!
P.S. Always be polite.

Terry G.

You have to hear it run. These were sweet running little engines-smooth, easy on fuel.

Be a little leary if run alot in salt.

The gentleman is asking $600 for it. It does not have power trim. It does have a ss prop. He said the starter was replaced last year.

Thanks for all the information. I do apprecate the folks on this board. I enjoy reading the post and I loved the one a few months ago about painting the house or the boat. My wife and I still laugh about some of the replies.

I think I will make a trip this weekend. I know the motor is not on the boat, but I have muffs, a battery, tank, compression tool to check it out.

Thanks again,

Terry G.
