Okay, so here is the problem. I like my 1982 SeaRay V190, BUT it does have a small problem, and I am not sure how I want to go about repairing this. The problem is that in the ski storage compartment, I am not sure if it is normally called something else, but anyways, in there there is a good amount of rot. I can actually pull out the bottom with my hands. on the port side wall of this enclosure, I can put my finger through a section that is about 6 inches tall from the deck to the middle of that wall, about about 9 or ten inches long. In addition to that. Towards forward section of the boat, UNDER the enclosed bow the floor is rotted in this section. Where someone would not even be walking. This is wierd. My question is would I be able to cut just this section out, and redo it. I have done alot of research on fiberglass, and I feel that I am capable of handling a project like this. The rest of the floor is SOLID, just the section toward the middle of the front seats seems to have the problem. I am open to suggestions. Thanks!

Boooooooooo!!!! Thats what I thought though. Any idea if time needed if I were to have to yank the whole floor and stringers and replace/reglass???

Re: 1982 Sea Ray Ski Storage

I have been at mine on and off for 3 weeks. So far, the floor and old stringers are out and the new stringers are bedded in. I am now currently wrapping the stringers.

How long it takes depends on how quickly you can work. I am taking a lot of time to do it right. This is my first stringer job so it is going slower than someone else, but I am sure the next one would be quicker. Remember this: It might seem solid in the rear now, but you could find more as you tear it out. My floor seemed solid in the mid section too. That's because the previous owner threw in some plywood on bad stringers and put carpet over it. Looked and felt nice, but was a band aid.

FYI: Those sides of your locker ARE the stringers.... At least they are on my Chris Craft.

Sorry to hear about your DECK, you can replace it but it takes some time. Just FYI before you get bombarded by other replies about this.......a boat doesn't have a FLOOR, it has a DECK. LOL, you can bet your last dime someone real soon was gonna say something about that. LOL, I have found out if you call something wrong then it will get posted quick to correct you. Good luck rebuilding your deck, this site will be a great help once you get started!!

Re: 1982 Sea Ray Ski Storage

Lol, yeah, I know. I was in the Navy, you would think I would know better! Anyways fellas, I just pulled out some more wood from the stringer on the port side of the boat, and I will be damned if that was rotted from the deck to the hull, BUT it was only rotted in an about twelve inch section, when I started to pull the fiberglass away further for or aft it was SOLID and dry. What should I do? Does this condition require I pull the entire deck and all the stringers, or is there a logcal and safe other way? I am debating selling the motor outdrive and scrapping the rest. I dont know though, I like the boat ALOT! Any suggestions? Could I just do the port side deck? It is rather funny, someone already cut out a section of the deck above the gas tank, so I think I could do the port side and be okay. I guess I should drill a couple o holes on starboard and verify that I am okay over there. Can/should I drill into the stringer over there? What would I use to patch the holes if it came out okay? Thanks fellas!

Re: 1982 Sea Ray Ski Storage

you should also have saturated foam under there, it has been known to hold 500 lbs of water. your motor mount may be mush also. cut till you are absolutely sure you are to good DRY wood, and foam. then cut some more if you are going to splice and sister. there are only 2 ways to do this. the right way, or don't waste your time or money, doing it half way.

Re: 1982 Sea Ray Ski Storage

Okay, fellas, so heres the deal. I cut some of my deck off tonight and guess what ABSOLUTELY NO WET FOAM. How insane is that. The stringers are very moist all the way back, but the foam is not. I am going to go ahead and swap out the stringers, so that means that I MUST pull out all the foam, am I correct?
In addition to this, I noticed that some boats have ribs that out outward from the stringers, this is a little sixteen footer, do you think this would have ribs. If it does, I cannot find em.......any ideas. In addition to this, right in front of the motor, there is a split in the stringers and it is glassed together. Is this correct? Thanks, I am sure I will add alot to this!

Re: 1982 Sea Ray Ski Storage

Okay, after spending a morning RIPPING my hands apart, I have some news. Good thing is, that I caught it just in time. ALOT of the foam was wet. Not bad yet, but wet. So I am ripping all that out, the stringers were wet, not rotted but wet. So rot is not too dar behind it. I got to the stern of the boat and discovered that I have two screw holes sticking through the transom of the boat. And the foam was wet and rotted all around those screws. Does this mean that I have a BIG problem with my transom. I assume that there is wood in there. What should I do from this point to see if my transom is bad. Thanks!

take a 1/4 or 3/8 inch twist drill bit, and drill some test holes from inside, put tape on the bit so you do not go all the way thru. you already know what wet wood looks like, check out the shavings of the bit. if good seal holes with 3m 5200. i doubt it though.

Re: 1982 Sea Ray Ski Storage

Okay, I have the one side of the floor out, ready to start work on the other side. I did as asked to drill into the transom, and as figure the wood is wet in there. I do want to ask though, it is only wet where the swim ladder is, and that is on the starboard side all the way outside. I do not plan on keeping this boat forever. So I really need to go all the way and tear the top off and pull the wood out of the transom and replace? I mean really, this is an I/O boat, and there is a hell of alot of fiberglass on the outside. Was this wood really used as a template?? Or am I in serious danger, and just bite the bullet and pull the motor gauge out the wood and replace? I am also going to place some pics on here with some more ?'s Thanks!

Re: 1982 Sea Ray Ski Storage

Okay, FINALLY here are some pics of my project! As you notice, the floor, at some time was split half and half, and an access panel the entire length of the gas tank, and well as a panel for the ski storage split the two halves. The two halves of the deck run STRAIGHT down the main stringers. HOWEVER on the starboard side, the side that has already been ripped out, the stringer right in front of the motor is mated against another stringer that goes all the way to the transom. This cannot be right, in addition to that the stringer is not even glassed to the hull!!!!!! What in the world. I should correct myself, it is only glassed to the hull on the side where the bilge is, on the side where the foam is, NOPE! What is up with this? Is this a half-a***d attempt at a stringer repair? I assume there is only supposed to be one main piece of ply going the length of the boat? Also, where the gas tank fits in, the stringers are compeletly exposed, no glass at all. This cannot be right either!!!!! Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated. Also, some advice on how to proceed with the transom. As you can see, the motor is still in the boat, and I REALLY do not wanna go through all that to take it out and tear the lid off the boat, if I do not have to!!!! Thanks guys!

Goodness! Man, I just cannot tell, actually, you know what is funny, I really DONT know what dry wood looks like! Every damned piece that I pulled out was wet. Surprisingly strong, but wet none-the-less. I will think/drink on it tonight, and figure something out in the a.m.!

I have a 76 and from the looks of it they only changed the location of the gas tank. where your gas tank is located thats where my ski locker is. your ski locker is where my new in floor cooler is. Just curious how much fuel does that tank hold. under the bow I have a 55gal what looks like a saddle tank off of a chevy work truck.

Re: 1982 Sea Ray Ski Storage

My fuel tank is a 30 gallon.
Okay, I think I may actually replace the trnasom in this boat. Do I REALLY have to take off the lid of the boat????? Or can I yank everything out and pull the core out and replace without pulling the lid?

Re: 1982 Sea Ray Ski Storage

Its a tight fit but it can be done. Lift new transom into place and swing down, most of the rear fiberglass engine mounts engine mounts will have to be removed.

Bummer, you won't have spare time for awhile. A cheap fan at your back helps keep the debris off you.
