1982 mercury 50 hp servicing lower end

i was told that when you replace the gear oil, you fill it from the bottom and it vents from the top. is this true? is there a trick to it

True. Get a gear lube pump here. Remove the vent plug, put a pan or something to catch the old lube under the L/U and remove the drain plug. Examine the old lube for water. Put the pump into the lube container and screw it into the lower drain. Pump lube in until it starts to come out the vent. Put the vent plug in with new seal and remove the pump from the drain. Install the drain plug, again with a new seal. Wipe up any spilled lube and go boating.

thanks, can i use 90wt rear end lube?

also, would it be nec. to replace the water pump impellor if i only use it 5 hours max yearly?

I wouldn't. Use Merc or Quicksilver lower end oil.

With the low use of the motor I would change the impeller every two years. That might sound like it's too often but lack of use is bad for motors too.
