1982 Johnson 70 hp starter failure

I have a 1975 Crestliner muskie 550 with a 1982 johnson 70 hp, and the starter gear engaged the flywheel while it was at full throttle. Has anyone experienced this before?

There must be more to this story. You are telling us that the starter engaged while running at full throttle? That would be almost impossible.

Was the spring on the bendix assembly ?----Have you check for a faulty ignition key ?-----Was any work done on the wiring recently ?-----Are you sure it engaged at full throttle or it never came down after starting ?

Taking a wild guess without counting the gear teeth, if the motor was running 5500 RPM, the starter would have to turn something like 50,000 RPM. Ain't going to happen.
