1982 Johnson 60hp control cables adjustment

I have been trying to get the right adjustment for my cables at the motor end. I know over time the cables stretch and need adjustment. It has been idling low and wants to die when I put in gear. I adjusted the cables so that it idles better, but doesn't have much power now when I put into gear. What is the best way to get the right adjustment on these 2 cables? Thanks!

you should not adjust your idle by adjusting the throttle cable. you adjust your idle by adjusting your idle timing advance. should be a screw in your linkage. you may need to clean out your carbs if it use to idle good.

I put the cables back where they were and adjusted the timing advance. I had to adjust it a lot so I guess I'll clean out the carbs. Thanks!
