1982 johnson 175 won,t go in reverse

my 1982 johnson 175hp will not go into reverse it just makes a grinding noise checked the linkage seems okay there what else should i do

Remove the shift cable at the motor and see if you can manually shift it to reverse. If so, it's the cable or throttle control that is out of adjustment.
