1982 glastron ssv 176

Hello all my wife and I just bought a new to me glastron boat with 115 Johnson on her ,boats in excellent shape and got it for a great price but I can’t seem to find to much info on this particular model my main concern right now is at WOT with my wife who is a tiny person along with my 2 tiny humans 3 and 1 and me (200 lbs) I was making out at 25 mph according to my phone gps I ordered an rpm gauge to c what my rpm’s are but it just seemed the motor was struggling to get us on plain I have 120 compression in all 4 cylinders along with spark I have the NGK plugs in it now which I am changing to champion I guess is that a normal speed for that boat 17’ bow rider thank you!

Looking at the Manuel I should be mid 40’s I read somewhere the NGK plugs don’t work with these motors could that be the issue?

Well let me day this, probably should be faster but it depends on things. GPS is speed over ground so if your heading into a tide, wind or up river than that won't tell you speed over water. When you got it on a plane did you trim the motor up to lift the bow so that you have less contact with the water? Was the weight (people) equally about the boat? Every 100 in a boat is a lot. Last but not least, is it propped correctly? Eliminate those questions than yes maybe the engine needs help. No offence here, but I love when someone says "got a new boat and got it for a great price"!!!! Remember what B O A T means....Break Out Another Thousand

Look up link/sync. That motor has several throttle linkage adjustments that need to work together for low/mid/ and wide open perfornance. Someone may have fiddled with it, and adjustment needed. Since it’s questionable at w.o.t, pull carb cover and make sure throttle plates are parallel to throat at wot (you can do this with motor not running, in forward gear). Also, check wide open timing (you’ll need a timing light). You can do this at cranking speed with starter using Joe reeves method (look it up). Basically, set wide open timing 4degrees less than spec at cranking speed.
I have a fairly heavy yarcraft 17’ with 90 Evinrude’84, and get 39 mph.. you should get close to or over that..

Well, 1st things 1st. Compression and spark test. Report the results. Verify that all 4 cylinders are firing.

Only after you determine that you have a properly working motor do you worry about propping.

Those old glastrons are prone to be waterlogged. The floatation acts like a spong and sucks up water. This makes them really heavy. Doesnt mater how shiny and nice it is.

Thanks everyone for the replies I am currently in the keys with my dad but when I get back I will check everything I also just figured out the power trim was removed (guy told me it never had one and my force never had one so I believed) so there is a different throttle control on her so maybe something with that also thank again I will keep you posted be safe!

+1 on waterlogged floatation under the floor.

Really that much soaked foam would make it that much slower? They said the floor was Redon 10 years ago who knows they did tho

Take it to a truck scale somewhere. A saturated boat weighs a ton. Also, pull carb cover with engine off and push throttle to full. Make sure carbs go to full open.
