I have a 1982 evinrude 60 model# E60ELCNM..... When I look online I see that this only had a trim, and not a tilt/trim set-up. Can anyone help me figure out if this is a tilt only unit, or a tilt/trim set-up.... thanks.

Do you have a single cylinder?
According to your model number that is the trim/tilt for your engine unless someone has changed it to just a tilt system.

Your model number designates that the motor was not fitted with power tilt/trim from the factory.....possibly only a tilt aid kit.

Only ever heard of a power tilt only system on earlier models.....never trim only.....happy to be corrected though.

The factory fitted ptt system for that motor looks like this.....

The port cylinder (left) is for trim and the starboard cylinder (right) is for tilt.

If you have anything different it might be something a PO has frankened up.....best be posting up some pics.

This is a pic of it.... it is a very rare type of trim unit.

Never seen one of those before, thanks for posting the pics.....is there a hydraulic cylinder there somewhere in the mix? To me that looks like it might well be a trim only type of deal but maxrules disagrees with that idea......

there is one hydraulic cylinder on the attached to the trim unit.... the trim unit looks just like the image in the link you sent me. The thing is what happen if that hydraulic cylinder is bad. There is no way for me to purchase the whole unit.

If anyone happens to see a used unit for sale lemme know..... I have to buy a new motor for it. I just hope the hydraulic cylinder is still good and not leaking.

There are still some used units like mine for sale on ebay occasionally.....for a price mind you . Thing is, with the age of these units now its not so easy to find good one.....there are enough parts still available to rebuild em though.....you would have to make sure this system is going to bolt straight up to your existing transom brackets before you part with any coin.

Another alternative is a CMC aftermarket unit....very spendy though.

What if I just run the it without the trim? How will it affect how the boat rides?

If you can move the mtr to change tilt pin position, you can experiment with that.

What you have is not trim unit but a tilt only unit according to that maxrules link.....it probably locks the motor in place as well.....provided you have a thrust rod installed in the correct holes on the transom brackets it could be okay going forward.....my concern would be going in reverse.....what will stop the motor from flying up?

Re: 1982 Evinrude 60 hp Tilt and Trim motor....

i think its trim only because when i pull the motor up by hand the cylinder only pulls up so far.... and its not far enough to pull the motor completely up. I took the trim unit off and with it off I can pull the motor all the way up. all i need is a new motor for the unit. the motor that i have on it now is bad. but will it affect the boat performance wise without tilt and trim?

Re: 1982 Evinrude 60 hp Tilt and Trim motor....

If you can lift it all the way up without it installed and unless there is a mechanism to manually lock the motor down, what is going to happen in the water in reverse when you apply power?

Think about it.....
