1982 60 hp timing issue ??

Hi to all you fellow boaters out there,, I have a question regarding the " JOE REEVES" timing method as seen in previous posts,,(would love Joe himself to answer).
Firstly, will this method be suitable for my 1982 60 hp looper (2cyl),, and can you please explain the use of the "adjustable spark tester" in conjunction with this proceedure,, (is the adjustable spark tester necessary or can i simply use a spark plug ??),,also is there a particular reason for the specified gap ??. thanking you all in advance,, Regards Ralph
