I was wondering if any had done a shaft extension on these? Do I need to split the lower unit to install the new shift shaft and drive shaft? There isn't anything on the shift shaft that would imply it is held in place with a bolt or pin. When I installed a new impeller I didn't try to remove the driveshaft or shift shaft.

Thanks,
Chas

Check shop.evinrude.com, look up your mtr and you should find the parts needed.

I already have the parts but am looking for advice about the swap.

I have no experience with that exact engine, but by the parts breakdown it looks like if you remove the water pump the driveshaft will pull out of the lower unit.
It looks like the shift rod has a retainer (#32) on it. Looks like you will have to remove the gearcase cover (#25) to get to it.
I am sure someone with experience with that engine will come along with more advice.
