1981 Evrinrude 35hp Manual Start Help!

Friends,

I have 35hp Manual Start Evinrude and came across some problems last week.

The shift lever will not engage forward gear from nutral. But if shifted from reverse, forward gear will sometimes engage. Reverse works every time. While checking the shift lever (engine not running) I moved the lever from forward position (engaged) to neutral, and the trans did not disengage.

I also had a problem with what I thought was cavitation due to weeds in the water, and now am wondering if trans was not jumping out of gear.

What do you think?????

It could be, or the prop hub could be losing it's bite on the prop. To get a better idea, remove the propeller, and when you put it in gear try moving the prop shaft by hand. If you are in forward and can still move the prop shaft freely, something is wrong. If you can't, check out the prop. There is a rubber hub pressed inside of it. It could be losing it's grip on the propeller in forward, but still have enough bite to hold it in reverse.

is this motor using tiller controls, or remote controls?

You can also check to see if your throttle position is too high not allowing the motor to shift into gear.
